Mary Jean Egert, 96, passed away July 6, 2022, in Boulder, Colorado. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church-Atkinson at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 15, 2022, with Fr. Stephen Englebrecht officiating. Graveside services following at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hooppole. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Thursday, July 14, at Vandemore Funeral Home and Crematory-Atkinson Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mary Jean Egert Memorial Fund.
She was born Mary Eugenia VanDeVelde, December 29, 1925, to parents Bernard and Emerentia “Emma” (Pakuer) VanDeVelde at home on a farm near Hooppole, Illinois. Her early years were spent in New Bedford, Hooppole and Walnut area. She graduated from Walnut High School in 1944. Mary Jean taught grades 1-8 at the Kedron one-room schoolhouse. On August 27, 1946, she married the love of her life Wilbur Egert at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Prophetstown, they spent the next 71 years on the family farm north of Atkinson. These years on the farm held many happy memories.
Mary Jean loved playing numerous cards games, bingo, and constructing puzzles. She was a founding member of the “Jolly Neighbors Club” which met for over 67 years. In 2017, she moved to Boulder, Colorado with Wilbur to be closer to their children.
She is survived by her sister Joann (Judd) Doty; her children: Sandra (Bob) Searls and Dr. Terry (Rochelle) Egert; 4 grandchildren: Stephanie Cusack, Michael Searls, Brittni Levering, Lindsey Phelan, step grandson George Pavlantos; and 9 great grandchildren.
Mary Jean is preceded in passing by her husband, Wilbur Egert; parents Ben and Emma VanDeVelde; 5 brothers: Herbert, Aloysius (Al), Bernard, Clarence, Lawrence; 2 sisters: Rose Oberle Powers, Luella Dhamers.
We thank God for sharing her with us. Mary Jean will forever be in our hearts.
