John Perry Grier was born October 4, 1947, in Flint, Michigan, and died at home June 15, 2022.

He attended Eastern Michigan University, where he studied political science and history. He graduated in 1969 and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. After serving in Vietnam, he returned home in 1971. Shortly thereafter, he married his college sweetheart, Frances Wichmann.

In his career as a commercial underwriter, he was employed by Commercial Union, Cigna, INA, and Handford Insurance. Then he became a partner in the Vanderostyne & Grier insurance agency in Geneseo, Illinois. Because he believed in giving back to his community, he was a Fenton volunteer fireman, served on the Quad Cities Easter Seals Board of Directors, acted as president of the Geneseo Kiwanis, and served on the Creciente Condominium Association Board of Directors. He was a member of VFW and Moose. He retired to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, where he could be close to the water, he loved so much, and talk to guests and friends about watching sunsets and hoping for the green flash. John was a wealth of knowledge who loved people. He entertained all with his jokes and stories. Photos taken throughout his life show the same relentlessly joyful grin.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Grier; and his daughters, Dr. Rebecca Grier and U.S. Army Capt. (retired) Jennifer Grier. He also leaves behind his sister, Catherine Dunham; his grandchildren; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Grier and Elizabeth Jane (Brunson) Grier.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Geneseo Moose Lodge at 1025 S. State St. on Saturday, September 3rd between 11am and 3pm.
