Roy was born April 6, 1941, the son of William and Kathryn (VanHyfte) Holmstrom, in Geneseo, IL. He married Betty Peterson to whom he was married for thirty years. He then married Sandra Rice on November 27, 1992 and she survives. He graduated from Geneseo High School, class of 1959. After high school he started auctioneering and in 1968 started his own real estate company, which he was still licensed. Roy also farmed during this time. He joined the band “The Ramblers”, playing guitar and saxophone, for several years, until leaving the band to start his family. He was a very active life member of First Lutheran Church and a member of the Kiwanis Club in Geneseo.

Roy raised Saint Bernards and Simmental cattle, received his pilot’s license in 1980, and in 1987 began training harness racing horses. One of his horses still holds the record at the Quad City Downs. Upon retirement Roy enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing trips to Canada to catch Walleye, and wintering in Arizona. He liked polka music, rodeos, and golf. He especially loved attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s various activities.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife Sandra Holmstrom of Geneseo; children, Tim (Sherry) Holmstrom of Atkinson, Chris (Cyrena) Holmstrom of Canton, Georgia, Angela (Scott) Himmelman of Geneseo, Wanana (Steve) Miller of Kettering, OH, Wendy (Burt) Loitz of Colona, Stacy (Brett) Hultman of Atkinson, Marty (Gloria) Beuseling of Fate, TX, and Corey (Jessica) Beuseling of Sugar Grove, IL; fifteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Bette Holmstrom of Geneseo; and nephew, Ross (Scott Kelte) Holmstrom.
