Maurice “Mose” Leonard VerBrugge, 89, of Geneseo, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2022, surrounded by his family. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at First United Methodist Church, Geneseo. Reverend Dr. Chris Ritter will officiate. A private inurnment will be at a later date at Colbert Cemetery, Hanna Township, IL. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Geneseo Chapel. Masonic services will be held at 4:30 p.m., prior to the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mose VerBrugge Memorial Fund, to be distributed amongst local charities in his honor.

Maurice “Mose” was born on December 10, 1933, in Hanna Township, IL, the son of Leon and Dorothy (Schwark) VerBrugge. He graduated from Geneseo High School, class of 1952. He married Barbara Jean Livesay on July 31, 1954, and she preceded him in death on October 5, 2002. Mose retired from Swint Communications, Geneseo, as a certified two-way radio technician. He handled maintenance and installation of various commercial, industrial, and government radio communications systems including systems for police, fire, hospital, ambulance, and sheriff departments. He graduated from DeForest’s – DeVry Technical Institute Chicago in 1953, and he held a First-Class License with the Federal Communications Commission. Mose was a veteran of the United States Army and Army Reserves from 1956 – 1962 and was stationed at Army Electronic Proving Ground, Fort Huachuca, AZ. He was a long-time ham radio operator (K9DHS), a member of First United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Stuart Lodge #92 A.F. & A.M. -Geneseo, Hanna Township Board Trustees, Bi-State Volkswagen Club, Wake Riders Water Ski Club, Gas House Gang Square Dance Club, and Coal Valley Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed spending time on his farm, especially mowing grass. Mose loved his family, including his loving dog, Nola.

Maurice is survived by his daughter, Pam (Rick Shiman) Keopple of Geneseo; sons, Alan VerBrugge of Colona, and Michael (Lydia) VerBrugge of Columbia, MO; sister, Doris (Don) Paul of Rock Island; grandson, Ted (Danielle) Keopple of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Lauren VerBrugge of Columbia, MO; and great-granddaughter, Laina Keopple of Charlotte, NC.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara VerBrugge; and son-in-law, Ted Keopple, Sr.
