Obituary

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann DeSmith, 89, of Geneseo, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2020, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 26, 2020, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Atkinson, IL. Reverend S. Stephen Englebrecht will celebrate. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery. A private visitation will be held. Memorials may be directed to the Elizabeth “Betty” DeSmith Memorial Fund.

Betty was born August 12, 1931, in Geneseo, IL. She was the daughter of Leo Grymoprez and Elsie (Schillinger) Grymoprez. She was a 1949 graduate of Geneseo High School. She married Glenn DeSmith on June 26, 1951. He passed away on September 10, 2019. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Atkinson and was formerly a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Annawan. She served on the Altar & Rosary Society and the Diocean Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Hammond Henry Hospital Auxiliary. She loved being with family and friends, playing cards, traveling, golf, ceramics, and having lunch with the “49’ers”. Betty and Glenn have spent their winter months in Arizona for approximately 30 years. They were members of All Saints Catholic Church in Mesa, AZ.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Mark) DeDecker, Cambridge, and three sons, Kenneth (Lynette) DeSmith, Atkinson, Gerald (Sue) DeSmith, Annawan, Lee (Andrea) DeSmith, Mahomet, IL; ten grandchildren, Jacob (Kristina)DeDecker, St. Johns, MI, Lance (Lindsey) DeDecker, Cambridge, Ashley (Ash) Weaver, Wilmington, NC, Denise (Blake) Haverback, Atkinson, Dawn (Joe) Driscoll, Williamsburg, IA, Danelle (Paul) Burrs, Dixon, IL, Elizabeth (Adam) Ancelet, Fowler, IL, Patrick (Jessica) DeSmith, Mt. Vernon, IL, Lauren (Bryan) Carper Westmont, IL, and Brooke DeSmith, Chicago, IL; twenty great-grandchildren, Haley (Brandon) Gruber, Nicole Haverback, Andy, Erin, and Erica Driscoll, Paige and Grant Burrs, Caydence and Alex Ancelet, Taylor and Kaleb DeSmith, Hayven, Isaiah, Zander, Elijah, Colt, and Chance DeDecker, Conley and Blair Weaver, and Brayden Carper. Betty is survived by one sister Jean Teerlinck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; parents, Leo and Elsie Grymonprez, and an infant brother.
