The Lady Leafs’ softball team won back-to-back games in dramatic fashion and competed against Morris.

Geneseo at LaSalle-Peru

The Lady Leafs scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to defeat the Cavaliers 7-6 on the road on May 3.

After L-P scored six runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, Geneseo’s Delaney Ostrowski hit a run-scoring single for the deciding run in the sixth.

Geneseo’s Jane Thomas singled home two runs in the second inning to give the Leafs a 5-0 lead in the second inning.

Thomas picked up the win pitching in relief of Andrea Wagoner who only allowed two hits during the start.

Geneseo’s Wagoner and Maddy Shoemaker each had a pair of hits.

Kaneland at Geneseo

Battling back trouble, the Lady Leafs’ Wagoner felt like she wanted the ball in the circle after warming up at the JF Edwards Complex May 5.

“We were checking on her every inning,” Geneseo coach Pat Mitchell said. “She came out after one inning and said, ‘I’m feeling really good.’”

Wagoner had reason to feel good leading Geneseo to a 2-1 victory over the Knights, and throwing her first complete game of the season.

“We hit the ball hard all game,” Wagoner said. “We finally found the gaps. I feel that was the key in this game. The team that found the gaps first would win.”

After Kaneland scored a run in the top of the first inning, the Leafs rallied for their 11th comeback win of the season.

While a dual was playing out on the mound, a positional battle between Shoemaker and Kaneland’s Morgan Weber was going on in the field.

Each time one made a spectacular play, the other would answer with a web gem of their own.

However, Shoemaker finished with the edge.

A senior, Shoemaker pulled a ground ball down the third base line which careened off the bag and into the corner for a two-run double to give Geneseo the lead in the fifth inning.

“We are really working hard and coming together as a team,” Shoemaker said.

In the sixth, Wagoner threw nearly the minimum number of pitches, and Shoemaker made a highlight reel sliding grab near the fence in foul territory.

With the tying run on first in the top of the seventh, Shoemaker made a diving catch on a ball hit behind second base to end the game.

“We have some girls stepping up and believing,” coach Mitchell said. “We talk about being confident and walking with a swagger a little bit and it has been fun to watch.”

Geneseo at Morris

A slew of first-inning errors allowed Morris to score five runs in the first inning, and the Lady Leafs were toppled in Morris 7-2 on May 7.

Shoemaker had a pair of hits and drove in a run for Geneseo, and Thomas notched an RBI in the sixth.

Geneseo record falls to 20-6 on the season.

The IHSA has announced the Lady Leafs’ softball team will be the No. 1 seed in the Class 3A Illinois Valley Central Sectional, Sub-Sectional A.

The Lady Leafs’ regional assignment was not avilable by deadline. However, Geneseo will be the top seed in either the Galesburg or Dunlap regional.
