The Geneseo girls’ golf team finished runner-up at the Class 1A Sherrard Regional
The Geneseo girls’ golf team finished runner-up at the Class 1A Sherrard Regional and were eliminated in the Rock Falls Sectional.
Class 1A Sherrard Regional
Geneseo (383) finished four strokes back of regional champion Erie (379) in the team standings among 10 teams at Frye Lake Golf course, in Sherrard, on Oct. 5.
Sherrard’s Nikki Schmitt fired an 83 for the individual title on the demanding par 70 course.
Geneseo was led by Jenna Cheek and Lauren Murray who each scored a 94.
A sophomore, the Lady Leafs’ Emma Snell fired a 95, and Elizabeth Roodhouse shot a score of 100.
GHS’ Lilly Henderson carded a 117 score, and Carson Dodge finished with a 119.
Class 1A Rock Falls Sectional
The Lady Leafs fell shy of advancing to state after finishing ninth in the Rock Falls Sectional at Rock River Golf Course, in Rock Falls on Oct. 8.
Murray was the Lady Leafs’ top finisher firing a 93 to finish in 27th place.
Cheek and Roodhouse each shot a 96 and finished tied for 34th place.
The Leafs’ Henderson carded a 104 for 62nd, and Carson Dodge finished 77th with a 108.
Geneseo loses senior players Isabella Pena and Henderson from this year’s roster, but Lady Leafs’ coach Jon Murray sees reasons to be optimistic about the experience players gained in postseason play.
“It’s good to have anything you can use for motivation,” Murray said. “The success of last year made us want to get back (to state) again this year. Now the failure of not being there will hopefully really drive them to get back to that point.”
