Even though Trevor Schefsky won’t be on the pitch this season, the Geneseo soccer team is making Schefsky a part of every play they make.

The Maple Leafs’ soccer team will wear a patch in support of their teammate Schefsky who is in Cincinnati, Ohio, receiving treatment for a genetic condition called DADA2.

“The seniors and juniors all know him,” Geneseo Coach Harvey Morton said. “They wanted to be part of it and to play for him.”

Dedicating this season to Schefsky, the Maple Leafs are showing their support with the hashtag #TrevStrong.

Kate Decker spearheaded the movement, and players and fans are showing their support with hoodies and T-shirts in support of Schefsky.

Morton said Schefsky anticipated being back in school and a part of the team this season.

“He ran into some more hard times,” Morton said. “Now, he’s back out in Cincinnati. He’s still a part of our team, and we gave him a number to in a way keep him as part of the team.”

On the pitch, the Maple Leafs will have a completely different look graduating 14 seniors from last years squad.

Morton will take over as head coach after spending the past 10 seasons as an assistant, but he thinks the fact that he’s been such a fixture in the program will give the team stability.

“It’s going to be business as usual,” Morton said. “They know the system. The sophomores, juniors, and seniors can step right in and it’s nothing new. They know me and they know our practices. It’s not going to be a hard transition.”

After reaching the sectional championship for the first time in school history in 2015, Geneseo reached the regional championship game for the fourth-consecutive season.

However, a Dunlap surge in the second half ended the Maple Leafs’ season with a 9-7-3 record.

In the regional semifinal, the Maple Leafs manhandled Orion-Sherrard 6-1 in the midst of a deluge of rain at the Geneseo Soccer Pitch.

Geneseo has a handful of players returning with varsity experience.

“A lot of our guys did get minutes last year,” Morton said. “We have some quality juniors and seniors coming back, and some sophomores who are going to have to step up. Our team speed looks good, and they are ready to go.”

The speed at the forward position is something the Maple Leafs’ believe will be a strength.

Senior leaders Reed Adams and Reed Vanderheyden have the pedigree and ability to provide the Geneseo offense, but the Maple Leafs lost a major pillar of the program with the graduation of Cayson Frerichs.

“It’s just about fitting the right pieces together and making a combination that works this year,” Morton said.

At keeper, Zach Bauer earned a lot of experience in the JV and sophomore games last season.

“He’s a good keeper,” Morton said. “He’s aggressive and I’m excited to see what he brings.”

Geneseo at Galesburg

The Maple Leafs opened the season with a 3-0 defeat facing the Silver Streaks, at the Galesburg YMCA Soccer Complex, on Aug. 22.

Galesburg scored three unanswered goals in the second half to topple Geneseo.

The Maple Leafs’ JV team picked up a 4-2 victory on the road in Galesburg.

Geneseo’s Ethan Holke, Mitchel Benhart, Kaleb Decker and Ryan Morgan each scored.

The Maple Leafs’ next home match will be against Alleman on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.
