Geneseo suffered their first defeat of the season in the opening round against Chicago Kenwood 77-60 on Dec. 26.

Kenwood had too much firepower for the Lady Leafs to contend with taking a 47-38 lead by halftime.

Geneseo was able to close the gap to 47-41 in the third quarter, but the Broncos pulled away behind the firepower of Brianna McDaniel who scored a game-high 22 points.

Geneseo lived at the free throw line making 20-of-32 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Leafs’ Hannah Himmelman scored a team-high 14 points and she grabbed 13 rebounds.

Maddi Barickman finished with 11 points, and Kaitlyn Webster finished with nine points.

Josie Brown tallied eight points and added eight rebounds, and Kammie Ludwig finished with seven points.

Keeli Frerichs scored six points, and Taylor DeSplinter finished with three points.

The Lady Leafs’ AbbiBarickman finished with two points.

In the first round of the consolation bracket, Geneseo downed Normal University 54-30 on Dec. 27.

The Barickman twins helped lead the Lady Leafs’ offensive attack with Maddi Barickman scoring 10 points, and Abbi Barickman. finishing with three 3-pointers.

Himmelman was the rock in the post scoring 10 points, but it was a team effort with 10 different players scoring for Geneseo.

The Leafs’ Brown, Frerichs, Webster, DeSplinter and Lauren Pardoe each scored four points.

Geneseo’s Ludwig tallied three points, and Anna Pierce finished with two points.

In the second round of the consolation bracket, Geneseo’s offenses got hot and defeated Springfield 65-39 on Dec. 28.

Maddi Barickman ripped up the nets sinking four 3-pointers in the game and finishing with a game-high 15 points.

Not to be outdone, Geneseo’s Abbi Barickman made three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.

Ludwig scored 11 points, and DeSplinter finished with seven points including a 3-pointer.

Himmelman and Frerichs each scored seven points, and Geneseo’s Adia Raya, Brown and Webster each scored two points.

In the consolation championship, Geneseo was defeated 70-34 by Normal Community on Dec. 28.

The Ironmen built a 39-22 lead by halftime, and Normal Community widened its lead to 60-30 by the end of the third quarter.

Geneseo’s Himmelman led the way with eight points, and Maddi Barickman finished with seven points.

Abbi Barickman scored five points, and Ludwig and Brown finished with four points each.

The Lady Leafs’ Pardoe, Frerichs and Eden McAvoy each scored two points.

The Lady Leafs next game will be at the third annual IHMVCU Girls Shootout. The Iowa and Illinois river rivalry game pits Geneseo against Pleasant Valley at Augustana’s Carver Center on Saturday, Jan. 5 with the game tipping off at 6:45 p.m.
