Geneseo at LaSalle-Peru

The Maple Leafs finished an undefeated NIB 12 West dual season with a 31-28 victory over the Cavaliers at LaSalle-Peru High School on Jan. 3.

In the final season for the NIB 12 conference, Geneseo won each conference dual match by just a handful of points.

The match against the Cavaliers came down to Geneseo earning multiple wins by decision to make up for L-P earning any bonus points.

“When it’s a conference meet there is something a little extra special there to make sure you are on,” Geneseo coach Jon Murray said. “We were lucky enough to slide by each of them this year.”

The match began with freshman Harrison Neumann earning a 6-3 win by decision at 170 pounds.

Geneseo’s Eli Allen won a 2-0 decision at 182 pounds, and Rob Stohl earned a win by major decision 13-5 at 220 pounds.

Billy Blaser won the 285-pound match with a 6-3 decision, and Anthony Montez finished his match with a pin in 37 seconds.

Geneseo’s Jayden Erdman secured an 8-6 victory by decision at 152 pounds.

“You can take any win and turn it into a loss and it’s a tipping point,” Murray said. “You look at the ones that were close those are big. Just a couple of match points can be a six points team swing which is why you have to win the close ones.”
