The Geneseo track and field team no longer has star Ericka Furbeck to be its anchor, but the Lady Leafs have breakout potential in nearly every event.

“We have a lot of girls who are right there ready to have a breakout season,” Geneseo Coach Kyle Morey said. “It could be a senior, a sophomore or a freshman. We have a lot of girls right on the cusp of having that great season. We need to stay healthy and keep progressing forward to make that happen.”

Last season, Geneseo claimed a sectional title for the first time in five years and had athletes compete in 11 events at state.

The expectation are already high for two-time state qualifier Josie Brown in the 800.

A senior, Brown had a strong summer earning All-American status on the track at the AAU National Jr. Olympics.

“She was on the outside looking in at the medal standings last year, Morey said. “I think, ultimately, it’s a goal for her, but I believe she doesn’t have anything to prove to anybody. She’s one of the greatest distance runners in the Geneseo program, and I look forward to seeing her relax and still put up great numbers this season.”

Abby Reakes is another athlete who seems poised for a state finish after a 12th-place finish at state last season.

A sophomore, Reakes has already set a personal record this season clearing 5’3”.

Maddi Barickman who punched her ticket to state last season in the discus with a throw of 106’1” at sectionals.

Alex Horne earned a state berth with the Lady Leafs’ 4x200 relay team and has already had a strong start to the season on the track and in the high jump.

Geneseo’s pole vault group has already shown a lot of promise.

The Lady Leafs’ pole vaulters captured several invite wins last season.

This season, Alexys Johnson and Hannah Rakestraw have each cleared 9’ which is more than a foot above where Geneseo’s vaulters started last season.

“They have a group of girls who work well together and push each other to be better,” Morey said. “They are all competitive and they each want to be the best. It’s pushing all of them to PRs and we are about a foot away from qualifying for four or five girls.”

With Horne, Julia Poel and Alison Bowers returning with state relay experience, Geneseo has plenty of options for a relay crew.

The freshman class can be expected to contribute right away too.

Geneseo’s Lacey Laxton had a strong cross country season, and she should fit well with the Leafs’ distance squad of Lauren Belvel and Anna Girten.

Ali Rapps has the sprint speed and confidence to have a breakout season in hurdles and running.

“I think getting some varsity experience in basketball has shown her that she fits,” Morey said. “She’s not just a freshman, she’s an athlete and she’s already put up great times.”

A sophomore, Esther Brown had a solid showing over the summer qualifying for the AAU National Jr. Olympics.

A state qualifier in the shot put last season, Geneseo’s Tori Verbeck suffered an ACL injury during basketball season and will miss most of her senior season.
