Geneseo’s Carson Raya earned a pair of victories at the at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) state frosh/soph tournament on March 10.

Geneseo’s Carson Raya earned a pair of victories at the at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) state frosh/soph tournament on March 10.

A freshman, Raya was defeated in the opening round 9-0 by major decision in the 101-pound bracket at the BOS Center, in Springfield.

However, Raya earned a pair of wins to finish among the top 16 in the state at 101 pounds.

During his first round wrestlebacks, Raya notched an 8-0 win by major decision, and he battled his way to a 2-0 victory by decision in the second round.

Raya was eliminated in a close match against Rock Falls’ Payhton Smith 4-3 in the third round.

Raya showed how much had improved during the frosh/soph wrestling postseason after suffering an 18-5 defeat to Smith during the Morrison Regional championship match two weeks ago.

Stohl nabs top 10 at IESA

Geneseo’s Tim Stohl earned a place among the top eight wrestlers in the state at the IESA state wrestling tournament in DeKalb on March 9.

After falling the in the opening round, Stohl battled his way through the wrestlebacks at 215 pounds to reach the quarterfinal round at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.

Stohl won his first wrestleback match with an 8-6 victory by decision, and he won his second round match with a pin in 2:59.

He was eliminated in the quarterfinal round after a 9-1 defeat by decision.
