The Lady Leafs’ soccer team has rolled to five consecutive regional titles by finding players who are reliable.

After putting together a 17-4 overall record and an undefeated Northern Illinois Big 12 season, Geneseo’s focus will be to reconstruct its consistently high level of play while looking for replacements for three-year starters Lauren Murray, Heather Dietrich and McKenzie Davison.

Geneseo Coach Harvey Morton sees a talented group of underclassmen ready to contribute this season.

However, finding replacements for such substantial players will be a difficult task.

“Can we be consistent?” said Morton of what he needs to see from the Lady Leafs. “With our starters returning, can we play together along with the younger players who are in these roles where we once had these seniors playing. They dominated those positions, so it will take some work.”

Graduation hit Geneseo the hardest on the back line.

The Lady Leafs are looking to replace three starters on defense from a unit which peaked with eight-consecutive shutouts culminating in a 4-0 regional title victory over Streator.

“We have a good mix of returning players who saw minutes last year and seniors coming back,” Morton said. “We are going to be young overall. We are going to rely on some of the younger players to step up and fill some roles.”

Anchoring the backline will be returning starter Kaitlyn Webster, and Geneseo has a pair of capable goalkeepers in Lauren Pardoe and Cadence Talbert.

“They both bring a lot of different things quality wise to the keeper position,” Morton said. “One of our biggest challenges is finding out who meshes well.”

Added into the mix will be frosh/soph team MVP Chloe Adams, JV team defender of the year Elaina Hines and Maple Leaf JV Award winners Ali Craig and Mya Jackson.

While the Geneseo defense has several unknows, the Lady Leafs have a solid group returning at forward and midfielder.

A junior, Geneseo’s Keeli Frerichs earned the Lady Leafs’ impact player award last season.

Sydney Anast, Kristin Polowy and Caitlin Gorge made strong contributions as midfielders.

Geneseo’s Rachel Daniels and MaKenzie Thompson proved to be great scoring threats last season.

As a freshman, Taylor DeSplinter grew into a forward Geneseo wanted on the field during the postseason last year.
