Geneseo’s Alex McAvoy represented the United States as part of the American Football Worldwide ELITE select team which traveled to Italy.

The American team of 33 high school football players met in Rome Sunday, March 24.

During the week the team practiced daily, each morning, with the remainder of the day spent touring many of the historical and cultural highlights of Italy.

The team and tour party will travel from Rome in central Italy to the tip of Lake Como just north of Milan.

During the week the players toured many of the historical icons of Italy including the Roman Coliseum and Forum, the piazzas of Rome, Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica, Sienna, Florence, Cinque Terra and Milan.

The trip concludes with an international game against the National U19 American Football team of Italy on March 30.

A senior, McAvoy played fullback, defensive end, and defensive tackle for the Green Machine last season.

McAvoy rushed for 522 yards and a touchdown. McAvoy was an All-NIB 12 Conference player, a 2018 Dispatch-Argus All-Metro Football All-Star, an I.H.S.F.C.A. Academic All-State member, and was voted Most Improved by his teammates. McAvoy was also a member of the National Honor Society.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to meet new teammates from around the United States and getting to play football once again while expanding my horizons by learning about a new culture,” said McAvoy, a Geneseo native. “My father is a history teacher, and I’ve inherited a love of history from him. I’m really looking forward to seeing ancient landmarks, such as the Roman Coliseum and Forum.”

McAvoy plans on attending Iowa State University to study aerospace engineering.
