Shabby Shack about to open in Orion

Terri Grafton will open the Shabby Shack on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the green building across from Pizza Hut at the corner of 13th Avenue and Route 150 in Orion.

Business The Shabby Shack

Owner Terri Grafton

What does The Shabby Shack offer?

Home decor for resale, including furniture, but no clothing or toys. Each item is in good condition. Nothing is chipped or broken.

"The furniture has been refinished by me," Grafton said. "I sand it and paint it, and make it shabby. I use a lot of color. It's just kind of fun."

When she's done, the items appear chic, she said.

Some items, such as a pair of end tables currently for sale, have not been refinished yet, Grafton said. The purchaser will decide how the items should be redone.

Eventually she will sell used books, including children's books.

One room, "Kenzie's room," is named for her 10-year-old daughter, who has taken an interest in the business.

Grafton also offers gift certificates.

How did you get into this business?

"Back in the day, me and my mom (Jenny Tholl) owned Sensible Changes," Grafton said. They specialized in helping homeowners redo their living space. "We used the existing decor and made changes. She's been a huge help. I wouldn't be doing this without her help right now."

She obtains items from garage sales, estate sales, other resale shops and Goodwill, as well as from people who are sorting through household items and have a couple of boxes full of stuff.

"I love bargain hunting," she said. "I love finding that deal and passing it on."

Does she take items from the public?

Grafton pays cash upfront for items people want to sell, rather than making people consign items and wait for them to sell before they receive payment.

She will pick up furniture from locations in the Orion area, if the sellers are unable to deliver the pieces to The Shabby Shack.

Those who want to keep their furniture, but with a new look, can contact Grafton.

"People can bring pieces to me, and I'll redo their furniture for them, and just charge for labor," she said.
