Keatyn DeGrave chases down the ball for Geneseo. DeGrave had four goals in the team’s May 17 win.

The Lady Leaf soccer team passed its first test in the IHSA playoffs with flying colors.

Geneseo shut down conference foe Sterling 7-0 May 17 to advance to Saturday’s regional championship.

“It was a team effort and everyone did what they were suppose to,” said head coach Ian Kline. “And all of our  players on the roster got good minutes.”

Keatyn?DeGrave helped propel the Lady Leafs to victory as the senior scored four of the team’s seven goals.

DeGrave got Geneseo on the board with a goal at the 16 minute and 25 second mark on the assist from Jade Mariman.

“Keatyn made a couple goals in good situations. She helped herself and others on the team gave her the opportunities to get it in the net,” said Kline. “She was in the right spot at the right time and just finished.”

Kelsey Nystrom followed with an unassisted goal at 17:36, while DeGrave added her second on the assist from Nystrom at 20:38 for the 3-0 lead.

Mariman punched through her first goal of the game, unassisted at 35:04, followed by a Rachel Morton goal at 35:30 on the assist from DeGrave.

“It took a little bit to get into things, but once we settled in and they figured things out we just started clicking,” said Kline. “And things opened up for us.”

DeGrave closed out the half with her third goal on the assist from Mariman at 39:25 to take the 6-0 advantage at the half.

DeGrave scored the only goal of the second half, unassisted at 53:23 for the 7-0 final.

Geneseo took 20 shots on goal and McKenzie Carey had seven saves in the net for GHS.

Sterling took one shot on goal and had 11 goalie saves.

The Lady Leafs (16-2-2 overall) will take on the winner of the Orion/Sherrard and Rock Island game for the  regional championship at 1 p.m. May 21.

“We’ve played Rock Island before, so we have a good idea of what they got and Rock Island already beat Orion so we don’t know what to expect from Orion,” said Kline.

“This is the point we have to win to keep going. We are not going to change anything. We just need to play our game. This team is pretty well rounded and headstrong so that should take us through.”
