Lady Leaf tennis splits with Sterling/UTHS

The Geneseo girls’ tennis team went 1-1 this past week with a win over the Lady Panthers of United Township, but were later shutout by Sterling at home.

Geneseo vs. Sterling

Visiting Sterling got the best of host Geneseo Sept. 16 at Richmond Hill as the Lady Golden Warriors swept the Lady Leafs, 9-0.

In singles play, Meghan Wethington was defeated 6-0 and 6-1; Sean Yerkey, 7-6 (2) and 6-3; Lizzie Wolak 6-0 and 6-1; Nina Frohling, 6-1 and 6-2; Kelsey Olson, 2-6, 6-3 and 11-9; and Kristina Breidenstein, 6-4 and 6-2.

All three doubles teams didn’t fare any better as Sterling took all three matches. Yerkey/Wolak fell 6-3 and 6-0; Wethington/Kelly Wyffels lost 6-0, 6-7 (0) and 10-7; and Frohling/Lisa Cathelyn, 6-2 and 6-2.

Geneseo’s junior varsity fell short to Sterling by one match, 5-4.

Winning their respective matches for the Lady Leafs were Rebecca Barnhart, 8-2; Jade?Collins, 8-5; Elizabeth DeMay, 8-3; and Caylie Lucas/Barnhart, 8-4.

Those falling short of victory were Lucas, 8-4; Kara Loebach, 8-6; Haylee  Gustafson, 8-4; Kara Loebach/Collins, 9-8 (1) and DeMay/Elizabeth Pierce, 8-1.

In exhibition play, Erin?Hultman/Katie Nelson won 8-6; Olson/Megan Wyffels were victorious, 8-5; Hultman/Nelson won 8-4; and Kelly Wyffels defeated her opponent, 8-1.

Geneseo vs. UTHS

The Lady Leafs hosted non-conference foe United Township Sept. 11 and Geneseo emerged with the 7-2 victory over the Lady Panthers.

The night started off with singles play and Wethington notched the first win for Geneseo, 6-4 and 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Wolak gave the Lady?Leafs their second win, 6-0 and 7-5, followed by Frohling, 6-3 and 6-1 and Olson with a 6-4 and 6-1 victory. Geneseo’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles players fell short in their respective matches — Breanna Loebach, 6-3, 3-6 and 8-10 and Yerkey, 2-6 and 5-7.

All three doubles teams were able to end the night right for the Lady Leafs as the squad swept the visitors 3-0.

Wethington/Breanna Loebach were victorious, 6-4 and 6-3, while Yerkey/Wolak won, 6-2 and 6-3 and Frohling/Cathleyn, 6-1 and 6-2.

The junior varsity squad also took down UT, 10-7.

JV-Fresh/Soph Meet

The Geneseo JV-Fresh/Soph team hosted Moline Sept. 10, but it was the visiting Maroons that emerged with the 30-10 victory.

Winning matches for Geneseo were Lucas, 8-6; Megan Wyffels, 8-1; Kelly?Wyffels, 8-3; DeMay, 8-1; Pierce, 8-4; Chantel Nelson, 8-3; Megan Wyffels/Rachel Milroy, 8-3; Kelly Wyffels/Collins, 8-2; Lauren Verplaetse/Sharin Fritz, 8-2; and DeMay/Sara Sneyd, 9-7.
