The church board and several members of First Congregational Church in Galva held a church retreat on May 3 with the purpose of building a shared vision regarding the future of the church.

The following mission and vision statements were produced by this retreat:

Mission Statement: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Jesus, Matthew 28:19-20)

The mission statement is “The Great Commission” as told by Jesus.

Vision Statement: A youth-focused, vibrant and diverse-age church that offers organized youth entertainment activities while adhering to Bible-based education in support of families and providing opportunities for members and others in the community to fellowship and join in helping those who cannot help themselves including persons that have been forgotten by the community.

In addition to these statements of purpose, the church also adopted the following core value:

Core Value: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)

The core value adopted by the church is “The Greatest Commandment” as told by Jesus.

At its June board meeting, the church began the implementation of its new vision. Initial exploration assignments include: expanding Sunday School to all ages beginning this fall; holding a parents night out once a month and accepting children ages 3 to 11 for an organized sitter and worship activity; addition of the “Eye Worship” program which includes visual, sing-a-long worship; addition of a second worship hour per week with a contemporary styled service; addition of a handicap entrance to the church.
