On Saturday, July 11, Daniel Walsh and Steven Lenertz, both of Cambridge, participated in a Senior Shootout at Monmouth College.

Walsh and Lenertz, 2009 graduates of Cambridge High School, were part of the Red Team (the South Team) made up of boys from Cambridge, West Central, Farmington, Williamsfield and Wethersfield. They were coached by two veterans, Mike Reynolds of Galesburg and Jeff Hannam of Cambridge.

They played the White Team (the North Team), made up boys from United, Monmouth-Roseville and Orion.

Even though the South Team entered the game hampered by two last-minute dropouts by players whose military or family commitments kept them from the game, the team won in a thrilling overtime by two points.

After being down by 20 points, the team tied the game in the final quarter and sent it into overtime to win by two points.

Before the game, each team chose a boy to compete in the three-point shootout. Walsh was selected by his fellow teammates and Josh Hutton of Orion earned the honor for the North team.

Walsh won the shootout and received a plaque for his efforts.

Walsh hopes to continue his basketball career at Black Hawk College-West, Moline, this fall, where he will be attending classes.

Lenertz will also attend Black Hawk College, but doesn’t plan to play basketball.
