OMS announces registration schedule

?The first day of school for Orion Middle School students will be Tuesday, Aug. 18. Registration for students new to the district will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 4. 

Students entering the district for the first time must present an official, certified birth certificate at registration. This must be certified by a state or county. Hospital birth certificates are not official or certified.

Registration for returning students will take place at OMS on Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Hours on Thursday, Aug. 6, are 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 7, the office will close at noon.

Anyone unable to register on these days should call the office. There will be no early registration. On Monday, Aug. 10, late registration will be made by appointment only.

All fees will be due at registration. Book fees are to be made out to Orion Middle School.

Fees include assignment notebooks, $4; athletic participation, $50 per student, $150 maximum per student, $300 maximum per family; band/choir cleaning fee, $5; school-owned band instrument rental, $25; gym lock, if needed, $5; hall locker rental, $1; P.E. shirt, if needed, $6; textbook rental, $46; technology fee, $10; and testing fee, $8.

Mini course fees are Art, $4; Machines, $2; and Environmental Science, $5.

At registration the student will receive a class schedule, gym lock if needed and athletic information if needed. 

Parents may put money into student lunch accounts during registration.

Orion Athletic Booster Club and Orion PTA will be on hand to give parents an opportunity to join.

Student handbooks will be handed out the first week of school. Each handbook will require a parent signature on the cover letter, internet permission slip and photo permission form.

Schedules will be distributed at registration in assignment notebooks. 

Hall locker numbers and combinations will be on the schedule. Only locks purchased from the school may be used on lockers.

The school no longer sells gym shorts. Each student has to provide black pocketless shorts for P.E. Gym shirts purchased from the school will be distributed the first week of classes.

All OMS?athletes must fill out the waiver form and return it to the office. They must also have a sports physical, which is good for one year from the date it was administered.

All-sport passes and season passes will be available at registration. They are not valid for tournaments or away games.

Orientation for sixth graders and students new to the district will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, in the commons at OMS.

Information covered will include classes, procedures and extra-curricular activities. Also included will be a tour of the building and time to practice opening hall lockers. 

Student Council members and some staff members will be available to answer questions.

Classes will begin at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18. Students are to report to the gym. They will be dismissed at 10:53 a.m. 

From Wednesday, Aug. 19, through Friday, Sept. 4, classes will be in session from 7:40 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. according to the heat schedule.

All after-school activities will hold practices after school unless school officials have determined weather conditions make it necessary to postpone practice until later in the day.

The normal schedule, 8:15 a.m. to 2:53 p.m., will begin Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Open house for parents will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. Parents and teachers will get to know each other, and teachers will provide parents with information about classes and the school.
