Geneseo wrestlers edge out Morris
The Geneseo High School wrestling team earned three wins and suffered only one loss on the mats this past week.

Geneseo’s grapplers made the long trip to Morris Jan. 12 and made the trip worthwhile as the Leafs captured a 38-30 win.
“Overall, I guess I?am happy with a conference win, but we definitely had some technical errors,” said head coach Jon Murray. “I want to see everyone learn from their mistakes and every night walk away having learned something no matter win or lose.”
The Leafs had to come-from-behind early Tuesday night after falling in the first two matches.
Sean Lillis (135-pounds) was pinned in 3 minutes and 48 seconds, while Mitch Miller (140-lbs.) was defeated in a 3-0 decision.
Shane Bormann (145-lbs.) gave Geneseo its first points of the night in a 9-1 major decision win, followed by Jacob Arnold (152-lbs.) with a 9-2 decision victory.
“I am proud of Jacob Arnold,” said Murray. “He had a tough match, but came back and took charge of the match as it went on.”
Collin Akers?(160-lbs.) was pinned in his match in 5:44, while Jacob Janssen (171-lbs.) earned a 8-3 decision win.
Ben Rudy?(189-lbs.) was defeated in a 7-2 decision, while West Cathcart (215-lbs.) pinned his opponent in :29 and Mark Cothron (275-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 3:37.
Tristan Thies (103-lbs.) also won his match by pin in 2:26, but Scott Summy?(119-lbs.) was pinned in 1:48 in his match.
Josh Dodge (125-lbs.) was pinned in 1:00, while Jacob Koster (130-lbs.) secured the Leaf victory with a 10-1 major decision win.
Geneseo at LaSalle-Peru
The Leafs traveled to LaSalle-Peru over the weekend where they captured two wins, but fell short in their final showdown.
“It was a good day and we could have gone without a win, but it was good to get two wins with what we had,” said Murray. “Against Normal, I wasn’t displeased with how we wrestled. We fought tough.”
Against LaSalle-Peru, Geneseo emerged with a 48-26 win as the team earned eight wins.
Summy (119-lbs.) started the Leafs off with a win by pin in 2:45, followed by Koster (130-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 3:19.
Mitch Miller (145-lbs.) nabbed a 4-0 decision win, while Arnold (152-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 3:33 and Akers (160-lbs.) edged out his opponent in a 3-0 decision.
In the final three bouts of the match, the Leafs secured wins by pin in less than 1:00 in all three. Janssen (171-lbs.) in :50, Cathcart (189-lbs.) in :57 and Alex Carney (215-lbs.) in :48.
Others competing for the Leafs, but falling short were Sean Landergren (285-lbs.) in an 8-3 decision; Jake Miller (112-lbs.) pinned in 1:55; Jacob Stimes (125-lbs.) in a 5-0 decision; Lillis (135-lbs.) by technical fall in 5:01 and Bormann (140-lbs.) in an 11-6 decision.
The Leafs later scored a 40-31 victory over Bloom Township.
Koster (130-lbs.) gave Geneseo its first win with a 5-3 decision, which was followed by Bormann (140-lbs.) with an 8-6 decision win.
Arnold (152-lbs.) won by major decision, while Akers (160-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 1:40.
Janssen (171-lbs.) came away with a pin in 3:07, followed by Cathcart (189-lbs.) with a pin in :49 and Carney (215-lbs.) with a pin in 1:04.
Summy (119-lbs.) was pinned in his match in 1:44, while Jake Miller (112-lbs.) lost by technical fall in 6:00. Stimes (125-lbs.) was pinned in :33, while Lillis (135-lbs.) lost by technical fall in 6:00 and Mitch Miller (145-lbs.) fell in an 11-6 decision.
Geneseo’s only lost of the day came at the hands of Normal Community by a score of 42-27.
Koster?(130-lbs.) won the Leafs’ first bout in a 4-3 decision, followed by Mitch Miller?(145-lbs.) in a 4-0 decision.
Arnold (152-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 5:40, while Akers (160-lbs.) came away with a win by a 3-0 decision. Landergren gave the Leafs their final win with a pin in 4:12.
Also competing for the Leafs were Summy (119-lbs.) pinned in 1:48; Stimes (125-lbs.) pinned in 1:22; and Lillis (135-lbs.) pinned in 3:53.
Bormann (140-lbs.) fell in a 4-1 decision, while Janssen (171-lbs.) lost in a 4-2 decision; Carney?(215-lbs.) pinned in :40 and Jake Miller (112-lbs.) pinned in 1:20.
The Leafs will be in action today at 4 p.m. in the first rounds of the Bi-State Wrestling Invite hosted by Geneseo and then again beginning at 9 a.m. Jan. 16 for the tournament’s final rounds.
“At the Bi-State, we don’t want to worry about what we are up against,” said Murray. “I want to see guts and our guys fighting to the end,”
