Foley runs away from big Galva 5k field

Derek Foley of Galva cruised to 1 7:52 clocking – 41 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor – to easily capture the men’s portion of the 2010 Galva Freedom Fest 5k Run/Walk on Sunday.

Foley, a top runner for the Mid-County Cougars co-op cross country team and the Galva High School track team, raced his way to the fastest time of all competitors – over 300 of them – on the 3.1-mile course. His nearest competitor was Jason Henkins of Kewanee, who ran an 18:33.

Joe Maslak, a Galesburg physician, was third in the men’s group, running a 19:30. He competed in the Boston Marathon earlier this year.

Jacki McKown, a recent graduate of Brimfield High School, won the women’s portion of the race. Her time was 21:29. She will run at North Central College in the fall.

Winning second place in the women’s race was Carmen Peterson, hometown unavailable, who ran a 23:08. Jessica Nail, who ran for the Ridgewood (AlWood-Cambridge) high school co-op, placed third at 23:18.

Kali Rabas of Bishop Hill was the top Galva School District resident on the women’s side. She registered a 24:30. She was followed by Brittany Rose at 25:15 and Kaleena Conrad at 27:10.

Madeline DeSutter of Woodhull won the half-mile fun run, held for kids ages 10 and under. Times were not recorded in that race. which preceded the 5k event.
