Galva American Legion announces Memorial Day services plans

The Galva American Legion will host Memorial Day ceremonies in area cemeteries on Monday, May 30.

Ceremony order is:

Bishop Hill Cemetery – 9 a.m.

Galva Cemetery – 10 a.m.

St. John Catholic Cemetery – after Galva Cemetery (approximately 10:45 a.m.)

LaFayette Cemetery – after St. John Catholic Cemetery (approximately 11 a.m.)

The times of the St. John Catholic Cemetery and LaFayette Cemetery ceremonies are dependent on when the preceding ceremonies are concluded.

At each ceremony, the Galva Fusiliers will offer a gunnery salute. Olof Collinson will play Taps.

Sgt. Maj. Nicholas Castillo will speak at the Galva Cemetery ceremony. He is the Directorate of Logistics Enterprise Sergeant Major, US Army Sustainment Command, Rock Island Arsenal.  

Among his many appointments since enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1987, Sgt. Maj. Castillo has served deployments to Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Joint Endeavor/Task Force Eagle (Bosnia), three deployments in support of Operation Joint Guard/Task Force Falcon (Bosnia), two deployments in support of Operation Allied Force/Task Force Hawk (Kosovo), and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sgt. Maj. Castillo’s many decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
