Flag retirement ceremony in Galva

Carol Townsend
Several officers, the chaplain and several members of the Galva American Legion held a flag retirement ceremony late Monday afternoon at the Legion. A ceremony was performed and a prayer was given by Chaplain John Holevoet.

The members then put the worn out flags in a fire and burned them. The fire got very hot with temperatures in the 90’s. On Tuesday, the remains of the flags in the firepit will be buried on legion property. This is a yearly ceremony that the Legion performs.

There is a box in front of the Legion for any tattered flags to be dropped off for the next flag retirement ceremony.
