Galva chess team players (all on right side of photo, starting from lower right) Jesse Humphrey, Charles Bollman, Hayley Thuline, Sarah Fredrickson, Devon Peterson, and Benji Munson Wykert contemplate their next moves against Peoria Richwoods players in a Jan. 16 tournament hosted by Peoria Woodruff.

With four starters missing due to scheduling issues, the Galva High School chess team went 1-3 and finished 11th in a tournament held Jan. 16 at Peoria Woodruff.

The Cats, who had gone 2-0 in a dual meet at Woodruff to open the season a few days earlier, struggled Jan. 16, going 1-10-1 on boards where  regular starters were absent.

“However, the encouraging news is that Jesse Humphrey and Charles Bollman, who regularly play our highest boards (1 and 2), won several contests and our freshmen were a combined 6-3-1, with Ryan Billingsly going 3-1 and finishing tied for third in the open division,” said GHS Coach Tom Thompson.
