Galva third grader Clayton Bumphrey reads a book to Galva Rotary Club member Ann Champion at Courtyard Estates in Galva on Sept. 27. Bumphrey was one of 23 Galva students who read to Rotarians and Courtyard residents Monday as part of a co-effort by the Rotary and Galva Elementary.

The Galva Rotary Club and students at Galva Elementary School are teaming up to read to residents of Galva Courtyard Estates on a monthly basis.

The Rotary – as part of a community outreach effort – and Galva third graders are reading to Courtyard residents on the third Monday of each month.

“It sends a signal to kids that reading is important, and it’s intergenerational,” explained Galva Rotary President Mike Massie.

Under the program, students will take turns reading to Courtyard residents and to Rotarians.

Students began reading to Courtyard residents and Rotarians on Monday. Teacher Cindi Glaser had 23 students present. They enjoyed sweet treats baked by Courtyard staff following their work.
