Jackie Carey English benefit events announced

The Jackie Carey English benefit committee is thrilled to announce upcoming events which will benefit English, 40, of Cambridge in her fight against the genetic disease, Alpha 1.

English is wife to Dave and the mother to Michael, Danyelle and Tyler English, all of Cambridge. Proceeds from the events will help with out of pocket medical expenses Jackie has incurred and help offset daily needs. She is unable work at this time, has no insurance and will need a double lung transplant to save her life.

A Taco Tuesday fundraiser will be held Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. at Mulligan's Pub in Coal Valley. Mulligan's sponsors the Taco Tuesday event. A donation is required for each order of 3 tacos, with proceeds to assist English. A 50/50 drawing will be held during the fundraiser.

Other events that will bring awareness to the forefront about Alpha 1 and Jackie's battle with Alpha 1 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, with a list of day-long events that everyone can come and enjoy.

A Fun Run will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, sponsored by the Cambridge American Legion Post #417. The ride welcomes cars, trucks and motorcycles beginning at the Legion located behind Bella's Pizza in downtown Cambridge. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with the last vehicle out at 1 p.m. The ride ends at the Henry County Fairgrounds Merchant's building with the last vehicle in at 5 p.m. For more information contact Mike Fritch at (309) 507-0040.

A Car Cruise will be held at the fairgrounds Saturday, Sept. 15 from noon until 5:30 p.m. Entry fee is a donation. Door prizes will be available and disc jockey Dave Beck of Galesburg will be on hand adding musical entertainment for the event. A 50/50 drawing will also be held. No coolers are allowed. A Demolition Derby will be held in the grandstand at the Henry County Fairgrounds from 2 to 5 p.m. Viola Boyz Productions is sponsoring the event that will help bring awareness of Alpha 1 to the forefront by requiring each demo driver to paint or display Alpha 1 on their demo car. Check-in for wire class, small car or fair class demolition derby cars will be held from noon until 1:30 p.m. No coolers are allowed. There is a suggested donation per each car entered into the demo derby fundraiser and also a suggested donation at the grandstand gate to watch the derby.

Alcohol, pop and bottled water will be available for purchase from the Cambridge American Legion throughout the day-long events and also at the dinner benefit. Identification is required for the purchase of alcohol the day and night of the event.

The Cambridge Champs 4-H club will have a food stand throughout the day from noon to 5 p.m. A cotton candy and Italian ice food stand will also be on site.

At 5 p.m. in the merchant's building at the fairgrounds a dinner, raffle, live auction and dance will be held. The cost for the dinner is a suggested donation and will consist of pulled pork sandwiches, cheesey potatoes, chips, baked beans, dessert and drink.

A raffle and 50/50 drawing will be held during the evening and a live auction will be held starting at 7 p.m. with Spivey Auction Service of Galva calling the auction. Identification is required to get a number for the auction.

Following the end of the live auction and raffle, a celebration dance will be held with 2 Smurfs Karoake providing music for the evening.

Literature about Alpha 1 will be available at the benefit and for information about Alpha 1 please visit the Web site www.alpha1.org. Also available at the benefit will be Alpha 1 Awareness and Demolition derby t-shirts, bracelets and can koozies with proceeds to benefit Jackie.
