When the Galva Fire Department prepares its annual hog roast meal, the city’s residents usually turn out in big numbers.

Saturday (Aug. 18) night was no exception.

A total of 625 diners enjoyed pork sandwiches, baked beans, coleslaw, chips and a plentiful amount of desserts at the fire station.

The result of the hog roast, raffles and Gustafson Ford’s “Drive 4 UR Community” event netted the fire department approximately $17,000.

“We’ve never had a year this good — ever,” said Galva Fire Department treasurer Rich Volkert.

Fire chief Denny Tarleton added the department had a “very successful” Saturday.

In addition to meals, the fire department was able to sell seven old fire hydrants that were recently replaced for a total of $675, and bags of pulled pork totalling $700.

Josh Dunn was the winner of the hog roast’s 50-50 raffle, and promptly donated back his $445 in winnings.

Joining Dunn as winners in the raffle contests were Kelly Townsend claiming the grill, Patty Collinson and Cheri Grabbe winning Fitbits, and John Hurst and D.J. Sunquist each winning an Amazon Alexa.

New to this year’s hog roast was Gustafson Ford’s “Drive 4 URCommunity” event. Residents were invited to take all types of Ford vehicles for a spin around Galva, with $20 donated to the fire department for each test drive.

The Drive was an overwhelming success as more than 300 drivers tested vehicles, which allowed the department to receive the maximum of $6,000 — $20 per driver.

Volkert also thanked Dunn, the Bates-King Memorial group and Wiley Park Productions for their donations and efforts in helping outfit Galva firefighters with new gear.
