Stephanie Jones award recipients named
Kelly Hutton and James Matson are the 2010 recipients of the Stephanie Jones Memorial Award.
The award is conferred upon two seniors, one girl and one boy, who live life to the fullest, always find time to laugh, and love everybody.
Hutton and Matson were presented with the award at graduation on Sunday, May 23, at Orion High School. Each received a check for $500.
During her years at OHS, Hutton was historian of Student Council, vice president of Executive Council and a member of Varsity Club and National Honor Society.
She participated in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and she served as a tutor at Orion Middle School.
Hutton was a three-sport athlete. In volleyball, she won All-Olympic Conference and All-Area awards.
As a basketball player, she received honorable mention on the All-Area team.
In softball, Hutton won the Sportsmanship and Team Leader Awards.
She was a unanimous selection for the All-Conference team, and she was on the Academic All-Conference team. She was named to the 2010 All-Area team and received honorable mention in a previous year.
Matson was a member of Varsity Club and youth group.
Also a three-sport athlete, he was captain of the football team and its quarterback. Matson was named to the All-State first team, the All-Conference team and the All-Area and All-Western Illinois teams.
In basketball, Matson was a point guard. He was captain of the team and a member of All-Conference and All-Area teams.
As a pitcher and outfielder on the baseball team, Matson was on the All-Conference and All-Area teams.
Hutton plans to attend Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, where she intends to play softball.
Matson will continue his education at Black Hawk College, Moline, and play baseball.
Kelly is the daughter of Brent and Shelly Hutton, and James is the son of Brian and Lisa Matson, all of Orion.
The award is named for Stephanie Jones, who was a senior at OHS when she died in a car accident in November 2004.
