Extended school program

Backpack Night at C.R. Hanna
All pre-school through fifth grade students and their families are invited to Backpack Night any time from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at C.R. Hanna Elementary School. During the open house, students will meet their teachers and classmates, choose their desks, put their supplies away and look around their classrooms. School will begin the next day, with a half-day from 8 to 11:22 a.m.
Music Boosters
Orion Music Boosters invites all parents of music students in grades six through 12 are invited to be involved in its activities. New officers are Toni Sierer, president; Shanan Pettifer, vice president; Sue Routt, treasurer; and Amy Killion, secretary.
Casey’s pizza punch cards
Orion Music Boosters is selling Casey’s Pizza punch cards, which may be used 10 times to buy a large pizza and get a free one-topping medium pizza for free. The cards do not expire. They will be sold at football games, music events and from the officers and directors, including Toni Sierer, president; Shanan Pettifer, vice president; Sue Routt, treasurer; and Amy Killion, secretary.
Charger Child Care enrolling
The preschool program at Charger Child Care, Orion, is now accepting applications from 2- to 6-year-olds for fall. Two-year-olds need not be potty trained. For more information, phone Beth McAvoy at 526-5777 or 737-8482.
No heat schedule this year
Orion schools will not have an early start, early dismissal schedule this year.
Early childhood screening
The Orion school district will screen pre-schoolers from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at C.R. Hanna Elementary School, Orion. Children who will be 3 years old by Wednesday, Sept. 1, or older, but who have not started school, may have their hearing and vision tested, and their speech and other developmental skills checked. They need not be attending a pre-school. For an appointment, phone C.R. Hanna at (309) 526-3386.
C.R. Hanna starting earlier
This fall classes at C.R. Hanna Elementary School, Orion, will begin at 8:05 a.m. The bell to enter the building will be at 8 a.m., and the tardy bell will ring at 8:10 a.m. In the afternoon, the bus bell will be at 2:49 p.m. and the walker bell at 2:55 p.m. Pre-kindergarten classes will be from 8:10 to 10:40 a.m. The changes are the result of a new bus schedule that reduces the time grade school students have to ride the buses.
Donations for school nurse
The school nurse’s office that serves C.R. Hanna Elementary School, Orion Middle School and Orion High School has a wish list.
Donors may bring to any of the schools items including saltine crackers, Q-tips cotton swabs, cotton balls, saline solution, Neosporin antibiotic ointment, Carmex lip balm, cough drops, Band-Aid adhesive bandages and Pull-Ups training pants.
Also on the wish list are baby wipes, Listerine mouth wash, Clorox wipes, bottled water, Tylenol Meltaways acetaminophen, Children’s Tylenol Liquid acetaminophen, Children’s Motrin Liquid ibuprofen, and lotion.
5th Quarter
Orion students are invited to 5th Quarter after Orion High School’s first home football game on Friday, Aug. 27, in The Ark at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion. Fifth Quarter includes food, fun and games, and some things that are new this year.
