True Freedom

Doug Boock

Americans all across the nation celebrate their independence July 4, and well they should. Being able to govern ourselves and not having to answer to the dictates of another nation are blessings indeed.

But at the same time, Christians all across the world can celebrate their independence. They can reflect on what it means to have received Jesus Christ as their savior and no longer labor under a notion that they need to work their way to heaven.

In fact, Jesus Himself calls all people to find rest in Him. He offers freedom for all – for all who give up their own efforts to save themselves, and find salvation in Christ alone.

"Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest," Jesus said in Matthew 11:28.

"If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed," Jesus said in John 8:36.

Likewise, Hebrews 4:10 says that "he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His."

Do you want real rest – eternal rest? Turn to Christ. Don't try to work your way to heaven. Let Him carry you into heaven through His forgiveness of your sins. Then enjoy the freedom.
