Pets and travelling: Some things to consider

Taking pets on vacations is the focus of Michelle VanOpdorp's writing in the "Ask the Vet" column in the Aug. 27 Galva News.

Q: Our family has decided to take our dog with us on vacation, what can I do to help keep him safe?

A: No matter where you are traveling to, it is recommended for your pet to travel in a carrier. This way he is not a distraction to you and if there is an accident he is restrained and has a better chance of avoiding injury.

If your family is traveling out of state, make sure you are aware of any laws regarding health certificates and vaccinations required.

Make sure to meet with your veterinarian prior to your departure to ensure your pet is healthy, fulfill any state requirements, and get any necessary vaccinations.
