Spikers near another conference title

Orion moved closer to another Olympic Conference championship with victories over Rockridge and Farmington last week.

The Chargers powered their record to 10-0 with the wins.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Orion defeated Rockridge 19-25, 27-25, 25-18.

Two days later, the Chargers overcame the Farmington Farmers 25-18, 25-10.

The girls boosted their overall record to 29-3 with four wins and a loss on the way to a second-place finish at the Mendota tournament on Saturday, Oct. 18.

In pool play, Orion defeated Spring Valley Hall 25-16, 25-11; Fulton, 25-23, 25-23; and Seneca, 25-20, 25-13.

Orion edged Lexington 25-23, 25-21 in semifinals.

With the championship at stake, Forreston nipped Orion 27-25, 27-25.

On Tuesday at Rockridge, the Chargers served five aces. Tori Matzen had two and Ellen Garrity, Alyssa Ellison and Kelly Hutton, one each.

Of the team’s 41 kills, Matzen accounted for 12; Ellison and Maddie DePorter, seven apiece; Megan Blumenshein, Garrity and Janel Cross, four each; Mitton, two; and Hutton, one.

The Chargers collected 36 assists. Hutton passed for 18 points; Mitton, 15; and Matzen, Ellison and DePorter, one each.

Blumenshein blocked four shots; DePorter, two; and Matzen and Cross, one apiece.

Orion racked up 62 digs, with Matzen getting 21; Blumenshein, 15; Carine Christal, 10; Ellison, six; Mitton, four; and Garrity and Hutton, three each.

During the Farmington match, Orion served 10 aces. Ellison landed eight of them and Matzen and Hutton, one each.

The Chargers smacked 19 kills. Matzen tallied 13 of them; DePorter, two; and Blumenshein, Cross, Mitton and Garrity, one apiece.

Of the 14 assists, Mitton dished 11 and Hutton, three.

Matzen and Nelson had two blocks each and Blumenshein and Cross, one apiece.

Orion’s 22 digs were divided among Matzen, seven; Blumenshein, six; Ellison, three; Christal, two; and Karolina Tobor, Cross, Katie LaBelle and Jenna Nelson, one each.

At the Mendota tournament, the Chargers landed 32 aces. Blumenshein and Ellison dropped eight of them into opponents’ courts. Matzen notched six; Hutton, four; Mitton, three; Garrity, two; and Nelson, one.

Orion piled up 117 kills, including 39 from Matzen, 27 from DePorter, 20 from Ellison, 14 from Blumenshein, eight from Garrity, four from Cross, three from Nelson and one each from Hutton and Mitton.

Mitton chipped in 48 and Hutton 47 of the team’s 104 assists. Cross and DePorter added four each and DePorter, one.

Matzen had 10 blocks; DePorter, eight; Blumenshein, seven; Cross, six; Ellison and Nelson, two each; and Garrity, one.

The Chargers came up with 209 digs. Christal led the way with 39, followed by Blumenshein, 38; Matzen, 34; Ellison, 27; Mitton, 24; Garrity, 12; Hutton, 10; DePorter, nine; Cross and Nelson, seven apiece; and LaBelle, two.
