Charger girls fall by inches

The basketball floated into the air and hovered above the rim, carrying all of the Orion hopes of going into overtime with Davenport Central.
But the wishes of Charger players, coaches and fans could not steer the ball into the net after all.
The Blue Devils escaped the Black Hawk College gym with a 50-48 victory.
Orion and Central played in the opening game of the Dearrel Bates Mississippi River Shootout, which is named in memory of a former sportswriter at the Quad City Times.
