The third-ranked Ridgewood girls basketball team suffered only its second loss of the season with a 65-60 loss to Princeville in the championship game of the Lincoln Trail Conference Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 23.

The Spartans (23-2) advanced to the championship after defeating Stark County 63-53 in a semifinal game earlier in the day.

In the championship game, the Spartans led 34-31 at the break but were held to six points in the third quarter, allowing Princeville to surge ahead 49-40. Ridgewood rallied in the fourth with 20 points but Princeville scored 16 of its own to hold on.

Stephanie Williams led Ridgewood with 31 points between the two games.

“After we beat Annawan in the semifinals, the girls were tired, but they played with heart,” Princeville coach Becky Gardner said. “And they were confident. They believed they could beat Ridgewood. And when we play with confidence and we play unselfish, we’re pretty good."

The Princesses’ Kate Morrissey and Leah Whittaker each scored 21 against Ridgewood.
