Orion Sports Roundup: Fernandez leads Orion golfers to 3rd

With her own third-place finish as an individual, Orion golfer Sofia Fernandez led Orion to third place in the Three Rivers Conference meet on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Baker Park, Kewanee.

Rockridge topped the team standings with 384, followed by Kewanee, second, 401; Orion, third, 413; Sherrard, fourth, 453; Bureau Valley, fifth, 474; Princeton, sixth, 477; Erie-Prophetstown, seventh, 482, and Peru St. Bede, eighth, 486.

Mya Mirocha of Kewanee was the match medalist with an 80.

The top 10 finishers all received medals and All-Conference status. They included Orion's Fernandez, third, 88, and Emily Olson, seventh, 101.

Also on the All-Conference first team:

• Kewanee — Mirocha; Eleanor Burkhart, sixth, 100.• Rockridge — Hannah Graves, second, 83; Amelia Rursch, fifth, 97; Kylee White, eighth, 101; Anna Carroll, ninth.• St. Bede — Gianna Grivetti, fourth, 93.• Sherrard — Alyssa Layer, ninth, 104.

• Orion — Kamryn Filler, 14th, 110; Eleanor Wilbur, 19th, 114.• Bureau Valley — Callie Schoff, 11th, 104.• Erie-Prophetstown — Isabella Johnston, 20th, 115.• Kewanee — Hope Peed, 13th, 109; Aspen Schwickerath, 18th, 112.• Morrison — Jordan Luhrsen, 17th, 111.• Rockridge — Neva Graves, 15th, 111; Cloee Slaight, 16th, 111.• Sherrard — Marissa Kunzman, 12th, 104.Other Orion golfers were Jennie Abbott, 45th, 146, and Rylin Smith, 47th, 157.

Cross country

Orion junior Olivia Thomsen finished fifth among 160 runners in the varsity girls race at the Dale Donner Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17, in Walnut. Her time was 20:07.2.

Senior Anika Duhs was 36th at 22:39.6 and freshman Abi Kayser 91st at 26:13.6.

In the boys race, senior Eric Thorndyke was 101st among 157 with a time of 21:13.1


Orion defeated Monmouth-Roseville 25-12, 25-19 on Thursday, Sept. 15, in the Charger gym.

Avery Knupp had eight kills and Rachel Bowers, seven. Grace Passno set up the hitters with 12 assists, while Lainey Kunert had seven. Passno served five aces. Emily Hickerson made four blocks.

Orion's record improved to 12-6 overall, 3-3 in the Three Rivers West.
