Galva's David Jeffries hits a breakaway layup during Tuesday night's IHSA Class 1A Regional Tournament game against ROWVA at Abingdon-Avon High School. The Wildcats were victorious 71-48, and will meet host A-Town in a semi-final match tonight.
The Galva Wildcats downed ROWVA 71-48 in the second game of the Class 1A Abingdon-Avon Regional Tuesday evening.
The Wildcats hit their first four 3-pointers and were off and running. They led 23-10 at the end of the first quarter and held the Tigers scoreless for the first 6:30 of the second quarter while maintaining their double-digit lead.
ROWVA battled back to cut the lead to seven points, 34-27, early in the third quarter, but the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run to open a 17-point lead.
Galva coach Andy Saey said the key was “Playing hard, staying out of foul trouble and hitting shots early.
“I thought our defense forced a lot of turnovers which led to some easy baskets,” he added.
Galva (14-14) had three players in double figures, led by Dexter Ingels, who had 28 points. David Jeffries had 20 and Rhett Hoxworth chipped in 14 for Galva.
The Tigers (5-20) were led by Kyle Woodside’s 14 points. Daniel Smith added 13.
Tonight's semifinal doubleheader matches the top four seeds in the field. In the first game at 6 p.m., it will be top-seeded Wethersfield (27-2) against Ridgewood (16-11) followed by No. 2 Abingdon-Avon (who beat Bushnell-Prairie City 62-39 in Tuesday's first game) against No. 3 Galva at 8 p.m.
This evening's winners will play in the championship game at 7 p.m. in Abingdon.
