Lady Leafs are starting to heat up

The Geneseo girls’ cross country team braved near triple-digit heat to earn the Rock Island Invitational at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island on Sept. 20.

The Lady Leafs’ Josie Brown led the way with a runner-up finish in 19:31.9 with individual champion Lylia Gomez of Moline taking the title in 18:59.2.

Geneseo earned the team title (42) over runner-up Moline in the six-team field, and the Leafs had three runners in the top 10.

A freshman, Geneseo’s Lacey Laxton continues to improve coming in eighth in 21:07.6.

Julia Poel has made the most of her senior year nabbing a ninth-place finish in 21:09.6.

Geneseo’s Anna Girten captured 11th in 21:33.8, and Lauren Belvel ran down 12 in 21:35.1.

The Lady Leafs packed up to finish with everyone in the top 20.

Anna Snyder came in 19th place in 22:37.7, and Anna Pierce was just a place back in 22:39.2.

Geneseo’s next race will be at the Freeport Invite held at Highland Community College on Saturday, Sept. 29 starting at 9:30 a.m.
