Illinois High School Associationcross country sectionals across the three classes take place on Saturday.

In Class 1A, the top six teams and the first 10 runners not on advancing teams move on to the IHSA state finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria. For Class 2A and 3A, the top seven teams along with those next 10 finishers not on those teams are also headed to state.

The Peoria area is well-represented at the sectional level with these 12 breakout runners from regionals:

Joey Cave, Peoria Notre Dame

The senior is making a push to help the Irish make it down the road to Detweiller. He took fifth overall in 17:37.2 at The Yeti CC Course at Donovan Park as PND finished second to Morton, 33-55 at the PND Regional. Cave and junior Andrew Elward (fourth, 17:34.6) were the lone top-10 Irish finishers at the regional.

IVC's Brecken Fahrenkrug competes in the Boys Class 1A race of the First to the Finish Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 at Detweiller Park. Fahrenkrug finished 21st with a time of 16:26.4.

Brecken Fahrenkrug, Illinois Valley Central

The Grey Ghosts aren't advancing to the Elmwood Sectional as a team, but Fahrenkrug will be carrying the maroon and grey banner. His sixth-place overall finish in 15:48.32 gave the 105-runner field seven runners under 15:50. The junior has not finished outside the top 10 in seven races this season.

Nellie Melick, El Paso-Gridley

The sophomore helped the Titans to a third-place team finish at the 1A Eureka Regional. Melick won the individual crown in 18:16.56 at the 3-mile Lower Lake Park course. Melick, Carol Wettstein (sixth, 18:48.8) and Sophie Hinthorne (12th, 19:46.4) give the Heart of Illinois Conference three sectional-bound teams — EP-G, Eureka and Tremont.

Julia Mingus, Peoria Notre Dame

The sophomore has emerged as the Irish's top runner, taking third overall at the 2A PND Regional in 20:35.6 on her home course — The Yeti CC Course at Donovan Park. Classmate Grace Yontz was fourth at 20:41.9. Mingus has 11 top-10 finishes this season is a big reason PND will compete for the Metamora Sectional at Black Partridge Park.

Eureka's Laurel Munson (134) crosses the finish line in 18th place with a time of 18:22.99 to help the Hornets to a third-place finish in the Class 1A girls state cross country championship Saturday Nov. 6, 2021 at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

The Hornets head to the 1A Elmwood Sectional at Maple Lane Country Club as regional champions thanks to Munson's third-place overall finish.
