Event of the Day: Meet the Cougars Night

DOUG BOOCK
Galva and ROWVA sports fans will get an opportunity to get their first look at their fall sports teams, including the Mid-County high school football team, led by coach Ben Rees, center, at tonight's Meet the Cougars Night at the GHS football field.

"Meet the Cougars," an annual night devoted to introducing Galva, ROWVA and Mid-County high school fall sports teams to the public, will be held Friday, Aug. 23 at the Galva High School football field.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. when photos of the football, cheerleading, golf and cross country squads will be taken.

At 6:15, all of those squads will be introduced, along with the Galva and ROWVA high school volleyball teams.

The football team will scrimmage at 7 p.m.

At halftime of the scrimmage, fans can go on the field and – for $1 per attempt – try to make a field goal. All people who make an attempt will get a pizza coupon. All people who make a field goal will get a Mid-County Cougar t-shirt.

Admission to the game is a canned food item to donate to the local food banks or a contribution of Gatorade to the football team, either powered Gatorade to drink during games or 12-ounce bottles to drink with a post-game meal.

The Galva Athletic Boosters will run a full concession stand with pork burgers, hot dogs and all other regular concession foods.

The ROWVA Booster Club will run a fundraising table selling t-shirts, sweatshirts, old ROWVA and Galva football jerseys, Cougar eye-black stickers, football bead necklaces, Cougars cups, coozies, window clings, hats and glow necklaces.

In addition, all this week in school, containers will be available in the school offices with the coaches' names and pictures on them. Students are encouraged to add money to the container of their choice.

On Friday night, the two coaches that had the most money put in their containers will compete in a kicking contest. The loser will get a pie in the face by the Cougars football captains.
