An early deficit didn’t phase the Mid-County football team.

The Cougars fell in early 12-0 and 20-7 holes to West Central Friday night, but behind the running of Bret Woodside, M-C rallied for a 48-28 Homecoming win at Adams Field in Oneida.

After West Central tallied the game’s first two scores, Woodside put the Cougars on the board with a 55--yard scoring burst.

The Heat scored again in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 20-7, but Woodside pulled the Cougars even 20-all at the half with scoring runs of 20 yards and 1 yard.

Woodside’s two second-quarter scores started a run of five unanswered M-C touchdowns as the Cougars broke the game open in the second half.

The Cougar lead was 34-20 after three quarters as quarterback Jacob Varner raced 44 yards for a touchdown and then connected on a 54-yard scoring strike with Tucker Sams. Woodside recorded his fourth TD in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard run to make it 41-20.

After West Central trimmed the deficit to 41-28, Mid-County’s Gunner Spivey capped the scoring with a 1-yard TDplunge.

In addition to his four scores, Woodside led the Cougars with 125 yards rushing on 10 carries. M-C finished with 443 yards of total offense — 343 rushing and 100 passing.

Varner finished with 101 yards rushing and completed his three pass attempts for 100 yards. Raige Ballard added 37 yards rushing and one reception for 15 yards, while Ernie Heinrich gained 39 yards on seven attempts.

For the M-C defense, Payton Haynes led the way with seven tackles and three assists. Isaac Cordle and Lucas Cruz added five stops each.
