Silver Streaks drop Western Big Six opener against Sterling; Knoxville, Mercer County win

GALESBURG — The Galesburg Silver Streaks fell behind early and never led in their Western Big Six Conference opener on Friday, a 48-21 loss to Sterling.
Galesburg slipped to 1-2 for the season in the home game. Sterling improved to 2-1.
The Golden Warriors scored first to take a 7-0 lead but even though the Streaks came back to tie the score 7-7, the visitors pulled away to claim a 28-7 halftime lead powered by a strong ground game.
Galesburg was hampered by an injury to senior starting quarterback Tristan Legate, who left the game briefly in the first half, returned to play in the second half but was hurt again in the third quarter and forced to the sideline. Gino Williams finished the game at quarterback.

Despite his injury, Legate passed for 197 yards and three touchdowns. All three of his TD passes were caught by senior Mikey Eiker for 35, 38 and 9 yards. He finished with 93 yards in receptions.
Galesburg will play next Friday at Geneseo.
