8 classes, 32 teams: The 2022 IHSA football playoff semifinals by the numbers

And then there were 32.

The semifinals of the Illinois High School Association football playoffs are scheduled for this weekend across the state, with championship games the following weekend at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

Last week, we dropped some trivia — with 64 facts about the remaining 64 quarterfinal teams. This week, we're coming with numbers galore: at least one stat for every semifinalist. And a few bonus miscellaneous numbers, as well.

0 — Previous semifinal appearances for Johnston City, which makes its first final-four appearance this season in Class 3A. It's the deepest any of the southern Illinois school's sports has gone since the softball team took second statewide in 2009.

0 — Points allowed by East St. Louis this Class 6A postseason, lowest among all semifinalists.

0 — Playoff wins for Class 6A semifinalist Chicago St. Ignatius before this season.

1 — Semifinal games scheduled for Friday. The other 31 semifinal games are Saturday.

2 — Teams that can defend their state championships. Lena-Winslow (1A) and Byron (3A) are the only 2021 champions still remaining in the field.

2 — Winning seasons for the Colfax Ridgeview/Lexington football co-op, which began in 2015. They were last season and this season, both state semifinal appearances.

2 — Teams unranked in the final Associated Press polls, but still alive in the playoffs: Forreston and Tolono Unity. Unity was first among teams receiving votes in 3A. Forreston received no votes in 1A.

3 — Four-loss teams still in the field: Forreston (1A), New Lenox Providence Catholic (4A) and LaGrange Park Nazareth (5A).

4 — Semifinal appearances for 1A semifinalist Camp Point Central since coach Brad Dixon took over in 2011. Before that, the program had one playoff win.

Quarterfinals performers: Peoria | Springfield | Rockford

4 — Number of schools in Glenbard Township High School District 87, of which Class 8A semifinalist Glen Ellyn Glenbard East is a member. "Glenbard" is a portmanteau of Glen Ellyn and Lombard, the two biggest towns of the district.

5 — Consecutive Class 1A state championships won by either Lena-Winslow or Forreston, who meet at 2 p.m. Saturday in a semifinal. Both are members of the NUIC, which has won nine of the last 11 titles in Class 1A.

5 — Semifinal appearances over the last six postseasons for 2A program Decatur St. Teresa.

6 — Appearances for Lemont in the Class 6A semifinals, including this one — its first since 2014.

6 — Semifinal matchups that are rematches from playoff games last season: Forreston vs. Lena-Winslow in 1A; Williamsville vs. Tolono Unity in 3A; Byron vs. Elmhurst IC Catholic in 3A; Rochester vs. Sacred Heart-Griffin in 4A; East St. Louis vs. Lemont in 6A; and Batavia vs. Lake Zurich in 7A.

6 — Shutouts this season for Class 5A semifinalist Sycamore, including the last two playoff victories.

7 — Playoff meetings between Chicago rivals Mount Carmel and St. Rita, including their Class 7A semifinal this weekend. Mount Carmel is 5-1 in the playoff series.

8 — Teams ranked No. 1 by the AP still in the running for their respective titles: Frankfort Lincoln-Way East, Chicago Mt. Carmel, East St. Louis, Sycamore, Sacred Heart-Griffin, Elmhurst IC Catholic, Decatur St. Teresa and Lena-Winslow.

8 — Championship game losses for semifinalists Maroa-Forsyth (2A) and Morris (5A), the most all-time for any program.

8 — Semifinal appearances for Frankfort Lincoln-Way East and coach Rob Zvonar since 2001.

9 — Consecutive postseasons in which Class 5A semifinalist LaGrange Park Nazareth has won at least one playoff game.

12 — Unbeaten teams remaining in the state semifinals. Seven previously unbeaten teams were defeated last week in the quarterfinals.

15 — Semifinal appearances all-time for Wilmette Loyola Academy, including this season in Class 8A. Eleven of those have come since 2011 under coach John Holecek.

15 — Previous meetings between rivals Rochester and Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, who meet in the playoffs for the third straight season. The Class 4A programs — coached by the father-son duo of Ken Leonard (SHG) and Derek Leonard (Rochester) — also play annually in the Central State Eight. SHG leads the series 10-5.

28 — Boys cross country state championships for Class 8A semifinalist Elmhurst York, now one win away from its first title game berth in football.

38 — Combined victories for the four teams to defeat Class 4A semifinalist New Lenox Providence (8-4), including two other semifinalists (Chicago St. Rita and Wilmette Loyola Academy) and two teams that won playoff games (Joliet Catholic and Wheaton North).

83 — Points scored by Class 4A semifinalist Wheaton St. Francis in a shutout victory over Kankakee McNamara during the regular season.

189 — Points scored this postseason by 6A semifinalist Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge, most in the field. They are led by QB Tyler Vasey, who this year already has set the state's single-season rushing yardage mark with 3,595. Lexington’s T.J. Stinde held the previous mark, rushing for 3,325 in 14 games in 2009.

323.5 — The listed enrollment for Class 3A semifinalist Elmhurst IC Catholic, which has yet to play a game this season against a school with a smaller enrollment.

417 — Rushing yards for Downs Tri-Valley running back Blake Regenold in a 46-22 Class 2A quarterfinal win over Knoxville. The total set the Class 2A playoff record for single-game rushing.

805 — Points scored by Class 5A semifinalist Peoria High in its 2016 championship season — the last time the Lions made the semifinals before this year. That total is an all-time state record.
