Lady Leafs are toppled during spring break invite

The Lady Leafs’ softball team finished its spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and opened the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference season against Sterling.

Geneseo finished the final two days of the tournament with a pair of wins and three losses against tough teams from around the country.

Against Riverside High School (Ohio), Geneseo’s Delaney Ostrowski pitched a complete game shutout to earn the Leafs a 3-0 win on March 27.

A senior, Ostrowski allowed four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in the circle to improve her record to 4-0 on the season.

Geneseo’s Bailey Spindel tallied a pair of hits and drove in a run, and Ostrowski drove in an insurance run in the fifth.

Dawsyn Hartman finished with two hits including a triple, and Bailey Mitchell added a triple.

Against Westerville Central (Ohio), Central took advantage of Geneseo errors to earn a 7-4 victory.

Geneseo couldn’t overcome Central scoring three runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.

The Lady Leafs rallied with a pair of runs crossing the plate in the sixth on wild pitches but couldn’t overcome Central’s late lead.

Geneseo’s Mitchell and Ostrowski each drove in a run in the fifth inning, and Ava Bieneman and Mary Thomas each finished with a pair of hits.

Against East Lake North (Ohio), Geneseo’s bats came to life at the plate defeating North 10-0 in five innings.

GHS’ Mitchell doubled and drove in two runs, and Ostrowski hits a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.

Cora Varland had a pair of hits, two RBIs and a stolen base, and Bieneman finished with a pair of hits and three runs scored.

Ostrowski pitched five innings allowing one hit with two walks and seven strikeouts to earn the win in the circle.

Against Erie McDowell (Pa.), Geneseo was unable to hang onto a lead late and fell 3-2.

Mitchell tripled to drive in a run in the fifth inning to give Geneseo a 2-1 lead, but McDowell answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

Varland drove in a run with an RBI single in the second inning, and Hartman and Spindel each finished with a pair of hits.

Against Grove City (Ohio), Geneseo’s late rally wasn’t enough toppled 8-5 on March 28.

After falling behind 8-1 in the top of the sixth, Geneseo’s Thomas hit a two-run single to close the gap.

In the seventh, Bieneman singled and drove in a run, and Ostrowski singled to drive in a run.

Geneseo at Sterling

The Golden Warriors struck early scoring five runs in the first inning to pave the way to a 9-5 victory over Geneseo at Sterling High School on April 2.

After falling behind 7-0 in the fifth, Geneseo rallied late scoring two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh.

Thomas hit a home run and drove in three RBIs, and Ostrowski tallied a pair of hits and drove in a run.
