Lady Leafs fall just shy of invite title

The Lady Leafs finished runner-up at the Geneseo Invitational, earned a win against Galesburg and competed against LaSalle-Peru.

Geneseo Invitational

The Lady Leafs fell in three sets against 1A state power Wethersfield at Geneseo High School on Sept. 8.

Geneseo marched through the tournament field to reach the championship game, and Elli Weller and Hannah Himmelman were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Leafs earned wins against Kewanee (25-17, 25-6), Mercer County (25-14, 25-14) in pool play before knocking off Annawan in the semifinal match 25-15, 25-13.

However, Wethersfield rallied when it mattered most.

After Geneseo won the opening set, the Geese forced a third set following a back-and-forth 31-29 second set.

Wethersfield took the final set for a 16-25, 31-29, 15-13 victory.

Elli Weller finished the tournament with four aces and 36 digs, while Hannah Himmelman tallied 22 kills, eight blocks, six digs and an ace.

Maggi Weller kept up her solid defensive play with 48 digs and four aces.

Maddi Barickman showed up all over the stat sheet with 77 assists, 18 digs, six aces and five blocks.

Abbi Barickman added to the Lady Leafs’ offense with 28 kills, seven digs, and Rachel Daniels played well on defense tallying 21 digs.

Keeli Frerichs put down 11 aces and she added 18 digs, and Emily Pobanz had a nice day on offense with 21 kills and 13 digs.

Geneseo’s Alex Horne added 10 kills and nine blocks, and Hannah Adams finished with two aces and five assists.

Galesburg at Geneseo

The Lady Leafs continued to build on their fast start to the season defeating the Silver Streaks 22-25, 25-13, 25-15 at Geneseo High School on Sept. 10.

The Lady Leafs comeback victory improved their record to 10-2 to start the season.

Himmelman had a strong match up front with two kills, two blocks, two digs and an ace, and Maggi Weller finished with 11 digs.

Maddi Barickman showed her range of talents with 11 assists, 12 digs, two blocks and three aces, and Elli Weller finished with six digs.

Pobanz tallied two kills, two blocks and three digs, and Horne finished with five kills and three blocks.

LaSalle-Peru at Geneseo

The Cavaliers flexed their might during a 25-11, 25-21 against the Lady Leafs at Geneseo High School on Sept. 11.

Geneseo (10-3 overall, 0-1 NIB 12) struggled early in the second set, but they showed their grit battling back to make the second sent close.

Maddi Barickman continued to excel finishing with eight digs, 18 assists and a kill.

Himmelman added three kills, four blocks and four digs, and Frerichs finished with seven digs.

The Leafs’ Maggi Weller tallied 13 digs, and Elli Weller tacked on six digs.

Geneseo’s Abbi Barickman finished with four kills, two digs and a block, and Emily Pobanz added eight kills and a block.

The Lady Leafs’ next matches will be at the Clinton Invite on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 8:30 a.m.
