NIB 12 champion Maple Leafs

The Geneseo wrestling team locked up the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West dual meet title with a victory over Sterling, and Geneseo hosted the Geneseo Quadrangular.

The Maple Leafs defeated Sterling 37-28 to claim the NIB 12 West conference dual meet title on Jan. 7.

Geneseo earned the title for the fourth-consecutive season finishing with one loss in conference dual matches.

“We can check that off the list of things to do for this season,” Geneseo coach Jon Murray said. “Now we can move on to the state stuff.”

Against Sterling, Geneseo’s seniors secured the victory by closing out a tight contest.

With Geneseo trailing 28-25, Cole Hunzeker finished the 182 match by pin in 1:15.

In the final match of the dual, the Leafs’ Justin Scott slammed the door on Sterling with a win by pin in 13 seconds at 195 pounds.

The Leafs’ Hunter Grau continued to demolish the competition, remaining undefeated this season.

Grau won the 145 pound match against Sterling by pin in 1:48.

Zach Humphrey started Geneseo out on the right foot winning the opening match in 44 seconds at 220 pounds.

Charlie Schlindwein earned a 7-3 win by decision at 113 pounds, and Antonio “Tumbo” Tumbarello won an 8-5 decision.

Geneseo’s Josh Decker won his match by decision 7-4 in the 132 pound match, and Ethan Kennedy earned a 10-2 victory by decision at 152 pounds.

Geneseo added another dual meet win at the triangular defeating Marian Central Catholic 52-27.

Geneseo finished with a flourish of pins to add to the blowout win.

Hunzeker (182) won his match by pin in 2:44, and Scott (195) finished off his match with a pin in 2:40.

Humphrey added another six points to Geneseo’s total with a win at 220 pounds, and Grau (152) won by technical fall in 2:30.

Schlindwein (113) added another win by technical fall with a 16-0 point total.

Tumbarello (120) finished his match with a pin in 32 seconds, and Andrew Rizzo notched a pin at 126 pounds.

Geneseo’s Payton Parr (138) locked up a pin in 1:05.

Geneseo Quadrangular

The Maple Leafs swept the field at the annual quad held at Geneseo Middle School on Jan. 9.

Geneseo picked up a close win over Class 1A ranked Sherrard, 39-33.

Trailing 33-15, the Maple Leafs came back with three consecutive pins which all came in under a minute.

Geneseo’s Scott (195) won by pin in 40 seconds, and Humphrey (220) won by pin in 42 seconds.

Sam Thomas (285) tied the match with a pin in 16 seconds, and Luke Sebastian’s win by forfeit gave Geneseo the victory.

The Leafs’ Schlindwein (113) won by decision in 11-4, and Tumbarello continued to perform at a high level adding a pin in 27 seconds.

Grau (145) gave Geneseo its fifth pin in under a minute winning in 26 seconds.

Against Herscher, the Leafs won four consecutive wins to swing the match in their favor.

Geneseo’s Grau (145) won by pin in 1:43, and Kennedy (152) pulled out a hard fought 3-2 decision.

The Leafs’ Jordan Jackson won the 160 match by pin in 3:05, and Hunzeker tallied a 14-7 win by decision.

Scott (195) notched another Geneseo pin in 5:28, and Decker (132) won with a pin in 5:15.

The Maple Leafs added another win to their resume defeating Beardstown, 54-22.

Geneseo’s Scott (195), Humphrey (220) and Thomas (285) sealed the win with three consecutive pins.

Tumbarello (120) won with a pin in 1:25, and Parr (138) notched a victory by pin in 41 seconds.

Geneseo’s Kennedy (152) added another pin in 3:33.

Geneseo at United Township

Geneseo tamed the Panthers 47-25 on Jan. 12 in East Moline.

The Maple Leafs won the first three contested matches to take a 16-6 advantage.

Schlindwein (113) won by major decision 16-7, Tumbarello finished the 120 pound match with a pin in 3:48 and Decker (126) notched a pin for the Leafs in 1:42.

Grau (152) finished off a pin in 1:34, and Kennedy (160) won by major decision 12-1.

Perren (182) fought for a 2-1 win by decision, and Humphrey won the 220 pound match with a pin in 43 seconds.

Thomas (285) continued to perform well adding a pin in 1:16.

The Maple Leafs will host the 41st annual Geneseo Invitational with preliminary matches starting on Friday, Jan. 15 at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 16, the tournament will begin semifinal and consolation matches starting at 9:30 a.m.

“This will expose all weaknesses because of the competition coming here,” Murray said. “It helps us get the competition we need to prepare for heading into the state series.”

The IHSA has announced the Class 2A regional assignment for the Maple Leafs. Peoria Notre Dame will host the regional action on Saturday, Feb. 6.
