Maple Leafs need everyone to contribute

Zach Humphrey, left, waits for an opening during a dual match against Ottawa last season.

In recent years, the Maple Leafs’ wrestling team had stretches in their lineup that made them tough to beat in dual matches.

This season, Geneseo will need to get points in a variety of ways to sustain their prowess on the mats.

The Leafs return two state qualifiers from last season in Sam Thomas (285) and Zach Humphrey (220).

However, GHS graduated pillars of the program in Antonio Tumbarello, Cole Hunzeker, Justin Scott and Hunter Grau.

The IWCOA Coach of the Year in 2015, Geneseo coach Jon Murray has a wealth of possibilities to work with.

Geneseo has a strong stable of wrestlers on the brink of a breakout season.

The Leafs’ Andrew Rizzo and Ethan Kennedy were both honorable mention on the 2016 Dispatch/Argus All-Star team last season.

GHS’ Billy Blaser earned the 285-pound crown at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association freshman/sophomore state meet on March 14.

Each season, the expectation is raised higher for Geneseo.

The Maple Leafs finished last season ranked No. 9 in Class 2A by Illinois Matmen after finishing as the NIB 12 West co-champions.

Geneseo finished just six points shy of Sterling from earning a sectional berth and a chance at their fourth straight team state appearance.

With lofty goals, Murray will be keeping a close eye on everyone through the first few matches.

The Maple Leafs added assistant West Cathcart to the coaching staff to share his wealth of experience with the team.

Cathcart was a two times state runner-up for the Leafs, and he earned All-American status at the Greco-Roman US Senior Nationals in 2015.
