Geneseo 14Us end season at regional

Geneseo’s 14U Babe Ruth baseball team competed in the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament July 24-27 in Jasper, Ind.

Play began July 25 with the Geneseo facing Owensboro, Ky., in pool play. Geneseo defeated Owensboro by a score of 9-1, after the squad put up eight runs in the third inning.

Jacob Pauley had two hits and two RBIs for Geneseo; while Braden Ries shut down the Owensboro offense as he only allowed two hits, no walks, no runs and struck out six on the mound.

In the squad’s next showdown, Geneseo fell to Warren, Ohio, by a score of 8-4. Geneseo took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Warren responded with one run in the second for a 2-1 score. Warren took the lead in the third with three runs off two errors. Geneseo plated another run in the fourth to close the gap to 4-3 in favor of Warren. Warren extended its advantage in the seventh with four runs; while Geneseo was only to muster up one run for the 8-4 final.

Keaton Rice led the way for Geneseo with three hits and Tyler Thompson had a single in the fourth for Geneseo.

On Friday, July 26, Geneseo suffered a 5-2 loss to Somerset Pulaski from Eastern Kentucky. Geneseo grabbed the lead in the first inning, 1-0 off a Jordan Jackson (who reached base three times) double, stolen base and then scored off a Sam Thomas single.

In the bottom of the first, Somerset plated two runs, and then drove in two more runs in the bottom of the second for the 4-1 advantage. Geneseo plated another run in the third, but that was the end of the squad’s scoring for the game.

Geneseo received the seventh seed after pool play and was pitted against No. 10 seeded Elkins, W. Va., for the first round of the single-elimination tournament July 27.

The Geneseo squad out hit Elkins, 7-6, but it wasn’t enough to get the win as Geneseo fell, 3-2.

Elkins jumped out ahead, 1-0, but Geneseo answered off an RBI double by Keaton Rice. Elkins plated two more runs in the second, which included a solo home run for the 3-0 lead. Geneseo responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the Elkins pitcher shut down Geneseo at the plate in the rest of the contest.

This was the fifth consecutive year the team had advanced to the Ohio Valley Regional for their respective age group.

Members of the squad include: Dylan Pardoe, Keaton Rice, Andrew Benhart, Charlie Wiese, Jackson, Cade Humphries, Kyle Sellers, Thomas, Pauley, Conner LeGrand, Ries, Thompson, Marshall Rice, Trey Johnson and Jordan Anderson.
