Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas, through a spokesman, refused to talk Thursday to the media about last week's arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.

"We respectfully decline to meet about this," said Cambridge Police Department spokesman Jimmy DiFrancesco. "We're not going to have any interviews or face-to-face interviews at this time."

Haas hasn't made any public appearances -- including a Tuesday news conference announcing the dismissal of the disorderly conduct charges -- during the biggest test of his leadership during the past two years he's been commissioner.

Kelly Downes, the legal adviser for the department, spoke to the media at the Tuesday news conference.
